5 Reasons to Receive Regular Massage

Massage therapy is a great way to manage many aspects of your health all in one. Here are 5 reasons to receive regular massage. Decrease in musculoskeletal pain, lowers stress levels, aids in lymphatic movement and drainage, the act of prioritizing self-care improves mental health, and improves circulation.

1. Decreases Musculoskeletal Pain

Finding non-pharmaceutical ways to manage pain is important. Our bodies are telling us something is not quite right by sending the pain signal. Musculoskeletal pain can often be from day-to-day activities, these aren’t going away, so we don’t want to use pharmaceuticals to manage daily (or regular) pain.

The evidence behind non-pharmacologic treatments includes massage therapy, exercise, and acupuncture in the study referenced. However, there are even more ways to manage pain than those mentioned.

2. Lowers Stress Levels

Stress is something that is inevitable, and we are all trying to find healthier ways of managing it. The study I read suggest the stress-alleviating effects (decreased cortisol) and the activating effects (increased serotonin and dopamine) of massage therapy on a variety of medical conditions and stressful experiences. So, massage is actually lowering stress hormones and increasing our happy hormones!

3. Lymphatic Movement & Drainage

What is lymph? Lymph is a colorless fluid containing white blood cells, which bathes the tissues and drains through the lymphatic system into the bloodstream. The lymphatic system is closely associated with our immune system. It has no pumps or valves but depends on movement to circulate. Exercise is a great way to do this as well as massage, because massage is manually moving the lymph throughout the tissue. The movement of lymph supports detoxification as well as immune support.

4. Prioritization of Self-Care

I actually found a study to support the act of prioritizing self-care actually improves mental health. We need to make sure we aren’t frying our bodies by asking them to do too much. By making self-care a priority you are improving your mental health as well as benefiting from all the other amazing things massage offers.

5. Improves Circulation

So much happens through our blood. Nutrients are delivered, waste is removed, oxygen is delivered to cells, regulates body temperature, clots, and fights infection. To oversimplify, we need good circulation to help with all of the above. By receiving massage, blood flow is increased to those areas. If you have a particularly tight muscle, by applying pressure then releasing, more blood flow returns to that area. This helps to reduce tightness in muscles.

Other Physical Benefits of Massage

  • reduced muscle tension
  • relaxation
  • increased joint mobility and flexibility
  • improved skin tone
  • improved recovery of soft tissue injuries
  • heightened mental alertness
  • reduced anxiety and depression

Living with Lyme and Co-Infections in Remission

I have been working towards remission for five years. I was sick long before that, but in 2018 I was officially diagnosed with Lyme disease. In January 2023, Lyme and my co-infections stop coming up on A.R.T. testing, and I have been in remission ever since. However, I am still struggling through some health related issues.

After being sick for so long and recognizing I have been caring trauma around for years, my nervous system is a bit of a wreck. It seems to be stuck in sympathetic mode, (fight or flight). My body actually twitches when it is trying to go into the parasympathetic mode. I am also struggling with vagal nerve dysfunction related to my gut. All of this while trying to manage parasites (STILL!!!) and hormones (thank you perimenopause).

What Does Continued Healing Look Like

I am incredibly thankful to be in remission from Lyme and my co-infections, however, there is still so much healing to do. I have said this before, and I believe it more now than ever, slow down and make your world smaller. This was the best thing I did to heal, and it is free!

I follow many people with authority in their fields on Instagram and they are all saying the same thing. Sometimes we try too hard to heal, stress about it, buy the next best thing. I am guilty of all of these. If you are looking for people to follow, check these accounts out.

Set Yourself Up for Success

So, after years of healing, thousands of dollars spent, what stuck? The things I continue to do daily, weekly, or monthly to stay in remission and continue to heal.

I quit an online job! I started it and within four months I quit! This is not the old Jill. I would have felt bad and stayed with it until a respectable amount of time had passed. I have nutrition and massage training and that is what I want to focus on. So, within two weeks, I quit, found a quaint space to practice massage in, and set up my online booking. I was circling the drain and getting more signs that this was not good for my health. I have worked too hard to stay, so I shifted very quickly.

5 Steps to Success

So, step one, shift your environment if needed. This was a must with my job choice.

We prioritize where are money is spent. I continue to see Dr. Jennifer Grushon regularly. This is to continue to work through gut issues, hormones, and parasites. As well as monitor my remission. Step two, I continue to follow a protocol. There is no way I would be in remission without Dr. Grushon’s help.

Step three, sticking to dietary needs and changes. This has been complicated as of late with my gut. I have been absolutely miserable. I told my husband this morning, “how am I supposed to help people with their diet when I can’t figure out what to eat myself?” I eat a wholefoods diet, but some of the good foods can still be triggering to your gut at different times and for different reasons. So, strive to listen to your body and use trial and error. That is the best you can do! If you are stuck try removing these foods: gluten (for anyone! so bad for us), dairy, soy, corn, eggs, artificial sweeteners, dyes, additives, flavors etc., inflammatory oils (safflower, canola, sunflower, vegetable). Then you can tweak other foods in your diet.

Step four, sleep! It isn’t rocket science to get sleep, but it is easier said than done when you have chronic conditions. All you can do it set yourself up for success, don’t stress over a bad night, try a short nap if you can when you are tired. I like the pranamat to lay on before bed. It helps relax my body. I keep lights low in the evenings, turn off wi-fi at night, try and avoid screens too close to bed, and take an Epsom salt bath about 30-60 minutes before bed.

Step five, I move my body every day! Sometimes Sundays I take off, but other times it is a great day for a walk. Do something, even if it is just stretching in your living room. Get some fresh air while you are at it. I have been weightlifting, running, walking and playing pickle ball for movement.

Tools I Use for Success

Time and time again I thought this tool is the thing that is going to change my life. They really don’t exist without doing all the things above, however there are a few things I would invest in if you are able.

  • Therasage infrared sauna – I use this 2-3 times a week when it isn’t summer here.
  • Dry brush – this is a simple and inexpensive thing you can do daily to move lymph. I do this almost every evening before my bath.
  • Coffee enemas – Check out more about those here. I currently do 1 x week. At my sickest I did 3 x week.
  • Consistency – no matter how you strive to heal, just stay consistent.

Please reach out with any questions or comments. I love hearing from people!

Lyme to Living

On December 25th, 2018, I received my formal diagnosis for Lyme disease. Ever since April 2016 I had been having what I would describe as extreme health issues. This all started up after heavy my amalgams removed, by what was described to be a holistic dentist. Also, at that time I was a single mom, training for a half iron man, and trying to buy my first house solo. A perfect storm for Lyme disease. I named this post from Lyme to living to track my progress and growth over the past six years.

If you want to read more about when I believe my initial onset of Lyme happened check out this post. But to make a very long story short, I was in my teen years and had a “mystery illness”. I was 36 years old when I got the diagnosis for Lyme disease. So, for those that don’t understand how Lyme works, it can be dormant and wait for the best opportunity to make you sick. This is why it is referred to as an opportunistic infection. Hence the perfect storm from physical, mental, emotional and chemical stress at the time it made its attack.

Healing Takes Time

After getting my diagnosis I was relieved, now I could get help, or so I thought. It is actually a lot harder than you think to find a practitioner that can actually help you on your healing journey. Almost another two years went by until I found my current doctor. Lots of money spent, time traveling, and honestly, I have done some pretty weird things to get to where I am. But with each protocol I would have hope, this is going to push me further along in my healing journey.

Along the way I realize it’s not just Lyme, it is six other co-infections. I think this is why there is no “one size fits all” for treating Lyme disease. One person may just have Lyme, then another person may have 1-2 co-infections. It just varied based on what the tick that bit you was carrying. I always say, if your doctor isn’t treating you as a bio individual, then find someone else.

Present Day Lyme

Two years really went quite quickly. So much of my health has improved and I am truly so thankful for my progress. Lyme and co-infections are funny though because you are always at risk of what we call a flare. Meaning you are humming along and then you wake up and find yourself three steps backwards. Currently I have woken up with a headache for the past week and a half. I hate taking over the counter drugs, but ibuprofen is a definite part of my life. I am not sleeping well, I have lots of pain in my body, and some days my patience wears thin. But I am able to move my body every day and feel more alive than I have over the previous years.

I was a big-time runner when I got sick, that was slowly stripped away from me. However, I have been running consistently again for almost a year. I choose to do a variety of things to move my body, from walking, running, lifting weights, and barre blend in my living room. I feel pretty good most days and I am able to do more in a day than I used to be able to do.

Currently I still struggle with the occasional flare, headaches, some pain, sleep, GI issues, some anxiety, but I don’t feel like I am dealing with more than a lot of people. I have serious grit! Most people with Lyme do.

My Favorite Tools

As I mentioned there is no one size fits all. Just because it works for one Lyme patient doesn’t mean it will work for another. But I did want to include my favorite healing tools I use at home.

  • Therasage infrared sauna – I use this 2-3 times a week. I purchased it last January through our health savings account. Definitely worth the investment and it is 20% off through December 25th.
  • Pranamat – I use this nightly before bed. It helps with pain and relaxation. My husband actually bought this for me last year for Christmas.
  • Green Compass CBD(an affiliate link) I started experimenting with CBD recently to try and reduce pain and reduce my consumption of ibuprofen. I am still in the early phases of this, but feeling very hopeful. More on this topic later.
  • Dry brushing before an Epsom salt bath nightly.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

If you are reading this and you aren’t as far along in your healing, stay the course. Find a practitioner you trust, follow through with your protocol, and be present with yourself. One of the last cogs in my healing wheel is my nervous system and emotional trauma. It takes time, patience, and a safe environment to heal. My prayer for anyone reading this is that you will find what you need to heal and be well.

A Few of My Favorite Healthy Things

I am a little late to the game with getting out a gift guide, but if you are anything like me you are a little over the hype. Afterall Jesus is the reason for the season, at least in this household. It is not an exhaustive list, but truly some of my very favorite things. All of my kiddos are a little older and Santa has phased out, so we have started to focus on family time, serving others, and not throwing thousands of dollars at a holiday intended for something else entirely. So here are a few of my favorite healthy things.

LMNT

Truly I am obsessed with LMNT. It is an electrolyte powder that is also sugar free. It is hard to find a clean electrolyte drink out there. Electrolytes are minerals that are essential for balancing fluids in the body as well as conduct nerve impulses. I drink a packet every day! They have some fun yummy flavors out for the holiday season. Use this link for a free sample with your order.

Hu Chocolate

Thank goodness there IS healthy chocolate. I need a simple pleasure or two in my life. Hu chocolate has simple pure ingredients. My favorite flavors are Salty dark chocolate and Mint dark chocolate. Great options for dairy free and they also make other yummy snacks.

Beautycounter

Everyone understands that buying a good cut of meat for a steak is important, but people rarely think about their home and beauty products in the same way. Just like the cut of meat, you get what you pay for. I promise you I wouldn’t recommend Beautycounter as much as I do if it weren’t really worth it. They have a never list of ingredients they will never put in their products and go above and beyond with an extra 23 safety endpoints tested. So, I know after detoxing all those heavy metals I’m not slathering them back on my skin, yay!

There is a sale until the 28th of this month for 20% off sitewide and 30% off on orders over $250. If you don’t know where to start that is okay. Start with the products you are almost out of and replace them with something cleaner and safer for you. Great gift ideas on the site. Order your clean beauty here.

***Beautycounter is my only affiliate link on this page 🙂 Meaning I make a small commission when you purchase through me with no extra cost to you.

Therasage Portable Sauna

I ordered this using our health savings account last January. Other than the few hot months we had this year here in Spokane, I used it 2-3 times per week. It was worth the investment, and they are currently having a 20% off sale. My daughter was sick last week, and I mentioned trying to sit in the sauna then to contrast hydrotherapy in the shower. She actually took my advice, and this helped her kick her sickness quicker. Sweating is important for our body to detox and most of us don’t sweat on a daily basis enough. In the cold months it is a box of heaven. Find more info on Therasage here.

General Ideas for Gifting

Primally pure deodorant – my personal favorite (will have 20% off sale on Black Friday)

Boka toothpaste (already 20% off)

Bomba Wool socks (already 20% off)

Four Sigmatic Coffee (currently 25% off)

Books, games, and puzzles.

Legos Architecture kits

Serve someone, it is free, and it leaves the both of you with more joy!

Insulin Resistance and the Use of CGM

Recently I finished my 3-month trial with NutriSense, a continue glucose monitoring system (CGM). I wanted to collect a few ideas around using a CGM and my experience using NutriSense specifically. We as a population in the United States are the sickest we have ever been with obesity hitting 78 million adults and 12 million children! Insulin resistance and monitoring blood glucose in individuals may be one of the most brilliant preventative measure to take.

What is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance is a condition in which your body does not respond as it should to insulin, a hormone your pancreas makes that’s essential for regulating blood sugar levels. The cells become less and less sensitive to insulin, so it takes more and more insulin each time to regulate blood sugar. This generally happens over a period of time so there are signs and symptoms that would raise a red flag.

When you eat your body breaks the food down into glucose, triggering your pancreas to release insulin. Insulin is what gets the glucose into the cells of your body for energy. If you can’t the the glucose into the cells, the cells can’t get what they need, your blood glucose stays high, and over time this become insulin resistance.

Signs & Symptoms of Insulin Resistance

  • Excessive thirst
  • Hunger & frequent need to eat (getting hangry)
  • Energy crash after you eat
  • Overweight/Obese (specifically abdominal obesity)
  • Elevated blood glucose (fasting it should be under 100)
  • Frequent urination
  • Diagnosed with “fatty liver syndrome”
  • PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)
  • Skin tags
  • Brain Fog
  • Lethargy
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Frequent fungal infections
  • Difficulty healing wounds/bruises

Why I Tried NutriSense

NutriSense is a CGM that is available for you to private pay for, meaning I didn’t need a prescription. Also meaning, it is all out of pocket expense. Haha, I am used to that with Lyme disease! So why did I choose to try NutriSense? Well insulin is a hormone, hormones control our body’s functions, and well I want a body that is healthy. After years of healing from Lyme disease I am pulling back all the layers and learning about my body each step of the way.

Truth be told, I don’t have signs and symptoms of insulin resistance. But I really wanted to know what the food I was eating did to my blood glucose levels.

I learned a lot, I did, but was it worth the $750.00 I paid to learn that? Personally, I would recommend starting with a DUTCH hormone test. Which you can have your functional medicine doctor order for you, or you can check out Dr. Mindy Pelz. She has the option to just order the test, or you can order the test with a consult. This will give you information on your hormones and what they are doing, including insulin. That is a few hundred dollars less that getting the monitor for 3 months. NutriSense is month by month at $350 per month or $250/month if you commit to 3 months.

Once the monitor was painlessly placed on my arm it is scanned by my smart phone. There is an app you download so you can see real-time what your blood glucose levels are doing. You have to scan it every 8 hours to maintain the log. I had zero problems with the process, but the last monitor I put on was hurting and I took noticing the incision was bloody. I think this was due to it accidentally going on the exact same place on my arm, I would rotate arms.

Insulin Resistance Leads to Disease

Most of hear insulin resistance and we think Diabetes, however so many other illnesses are related to insulin resistance. This is really a topic you want to learn about to live a healthy and long life. Diabetes, kidney and liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease are all linked to insulin resistance.

Alzheimer’s disease runs in my family. This is another big reason why I wanted to know if I was metabolically flexible. I have to give a PSA here, just because something “runs” in your family, doesn’t mean you are doomed to have that particular disease. Epigenetics, which is another HUGE topic, explains this. By how we live and what we do, we are switching on or off the good and bad genes. Check out Dr. Ben Lynch’s book, Dirty Genes for more on that topic. This includes products we use on our bodies and in our homes, find tips on my Resource page.

In addition, if you are looking for easy and affordable ways to improve the health of your home check out this post I wrote 5 Small Changes to Improve the Health of Your Home.

Wanting to start somewhere, but don’t know where to start? Check out this article by Dr. Mindy Pelz on metabolic flexibility. She has many free resources and is considered and expert on this topic.

That’s a Wrap

Knowing what is going on with your blood glucose is an excellent tool for overall health. Even if you can only purchase one month you will learn things specific to you that can help your health. To be clear, I am not affiliated with NutriSense, this information is created with the purpose of helping others make informed decisions.

Eating For Lyme

Years, years it has been of me trying to figure out what to eat for optimal health. My journey with healthy eating started in my late teens and early 20’s. Although my first onset of Lyme disease had happened at age 16, I was walking around completely unaware. I seemed to be the person in my family that always had the “weird” health issues pop up despite striving to be healthy.

Before really knowing much about a healthy diet I knew dairy upset my body and too much flour, specifically from gluten grains. In addition, a really high fat meal didn’t seem to sit well. Even going through a holistic whole foods nutrition program such as the one offered at Bastyr University, I was still struggling with how to feed myself. I knew I shouldn’t feel sluggish and bloated after eating a meal.

There Is No One Size Fits All Diet

Let me repeat, THERE IS NO ONE SIZE FITS ALL DIET! Especially when healing from a chronic illness. If a doctor or other health practitioner suggests there is, please save your money and go somewhere else. It will absolutely be a trial and error on the road to healing. And believe me, I have tried it all!

  • Grain free
  • Paleo
  • Vegan
  • Vegetarian
  • Keto – crash and burn
  • Intermittent fasting
  • Food allergy testing and avoidance

Across the board people with chronic illness need to work on supporting their liver, drainage pathways, and detox. If you have a burdened liver, high fat won’t make you feel better, it will make you feel worse. I am not saying there isn’t a place for a keto lifestyle, what I am saying is when healing from a chronic illness such as Lyme disease, you need less dietary fat. Think of it as giving your liver a helping hand.

***The information provided on Lyme Revival is not a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment for specific medical conditions. You should not use this information to diagnose or treat a health problem without consulting a qualified healthcare provider.

Going grain free helped quite a bit for me. It isn’t as hard as you think. Especially if you have already given up gluten, all of those foods you once desired are off the table, literally. Paleo rides alongside of grain free, which was equally helpful for me in the beginning. If you haven’t given up gluten and you are trying to heal from a chronic illness of any kind, it is time! Chronic illness is anything from chronic sinus issues, gastrointestinal (IBS), asthma, to autoimmune disease. Give up the gluten! There isn’t such a thing is “mostly” gluten free. You either eat it or you don’t. Tough love on this one! I can even help, check out my holistic nutrition page here.

What Worked for Me?

As mentioned above, cutting the fat was important, eliminating gluten and most grains, NO DAIRY either. Sorry folks. All of these people positioning themselves as diet “influencers” recommending grass fed butter, raw milk, and heavy cream are most likely not healing a chronic illness. Dairy is inflammatory to the body. Please don’t swap out real dairy for fake dairy. There are usually harmful oils and weird random fillers in those. Although, I have found 1 cheese alternative that I feel okay about consuming.

Vegetables, vegetables, and more vegetables. I eat a lot of vegetables. I also found fruit to be healing and easy to digest when I was in some of my most inflammatory times. Currently I can now tolerate some gluten free grains like oats, quinoa, and rice, but I don’t overdo it. Really, my body loved eating a vegan diet. That being said, I didn’t swap out dairy and meat for fake swaps. I just ate foods naturally vegan, such as vegetables, fruit, seeds, etc.

I love intermittent fasting! Naturally my body slipped into this cycle on its own before I realized I was doing it. The less food my body had to digest the stronger my digestion became. As for the food intolerance testing, I didn’t find it all that useful for me personally. I think you can save your money and listen to your body more by using a diet journal at first. Write down what you ate and how you felt. This can help track foods that your body isn’t thriving on. This is a quick snippet on eating while healing a chronic illness. If you want to read further check out these posts: Holistic Nutrition Archives – Lyme Revival.

The Recipe

What you will need: makes 8 medium pancakes

  • 1 cup raw sunflower seeds (no added oils, check label)
  • 1 cup raw pumpkin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
  • 1/2 cup gluten free oat flour (I use this flour)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup plant-based milk of your choice (use water if needed)
  • 6 tablespoons of filtered water

Combine 2 tablespoons of ground flax seeds and 6 tablespoons of filtered water to make flax eggs. (Standard is 1 T flax to 3 T of water). Set aside.

In a food processor or coffee grinder, process the seeds into a flour like consistency. It doesn’t have to be perfect, if there are small pieces it just adds texture.

Once ground, combine seeds, flour, salt, baking soda and cinnamon. Create a well in the middle of the mixture and pour in milk, flax eggs, and vinegar. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should resemble “pancake batter” consistency.

Heat a pan on the stove, then add oil if needed to prevent sticking (this should be 100% avocado oil or coconut oil). Olive oil shouldn’t be used due to low smoke point. Sunflower, safflower and canola oils are all inflammatory oils. Ghee is okay and can be tolerated by many that have eliminated dairy.

Ladle mixture to pan and proceed as making any standard pancake. The pancakes won’t bubble like a flour mixture, but it takes roughly 2 minutes per side.

Clean Beauty with BEAUTYCOUNTER

I have been in the clean beauty camp for roughly 20 years. What exactly is clean beauty? Clean beauty means products don’t have harmful chemicals in them, as well as synthetic fragrance. Did you know that skin is our largest organ? Imagine putting some of these harmful products right on your liver. We wouldn’t consider doing that, so let’s carefully consider what we put on our skin. Did you know the last major law passed for safety of skincare was in 1938?

After trying many brands and many products, BEAUTYCOUNTER seems to come out on top over and over again. Having a chronic illness like Lyme disease I work really hard at limiting my exposure to unnecessary environmental toxins. Products we use on our skin and in our homes are critically important. Just by making a few small changes in those areas you can decrease your toxic load and increase your health.

BEAUTYCOUNTER has a NEVER LIST, which is comprised of a list of 1,800 questionable ingredients they will never use in their products. On their website you will also find a full list of ingredients and where they are sourced. The transparency is refreshing!

Why I Chose BEAUTYCOUNTER

Before I got sick I had really nice clear skin. After a year of antibiotics (which I regret!) and years of trying to process toxins out of my body, my skin has taken a hit. I have mentioned before melasma and acne being something I am super self-conscious about.

  • I like that you can order directly from their website, not just through a consultant. Do I appreciate you ordering through me? Yes, I do, but I don’t want people to feel like they have to.
  • I feel safe!
  • Products that are safe for me AND they work! Although, I am still struggling with melasma my skin is looking clearer, softer, and brighter.
  • Offer Band of Beauty rewards

Favorite BEAUTYCOUNTER Products

Counter + All Bright C Serum – I use this after cleansing and before my facial oil in the morning. It really does make my skin look brighter and glow. Also, for people sensitive to smells, this product won’t disappoint.

Counter + No.1 Brightening Oil – I use this oil for morning and evening cleansing routine. My melasma is still there, but this has started making a difference on my forehead. It goes on light and quenches my dry skin. I have used other oils that feel like I am just rubbing olive oil on. The only other oil I would ever recommend is True Botanicals Pure Radiance oil. On my Resource page you will find other clean beauty websites as well.

Counter + Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm – This stuff is amazing! It takes off all my makeup and mascara without harsh rubbing. To remove it you use a warm washcloth which always feels so good. In addition, you can use this as an overnight mask. This past winter when my skin was super dry, I loved using this 1-2 times a week to keep my skin healthy and following.

Counter + Overnight Resurfacing Peel – Instead of the Counter + All Bright C Serum I use this in the evening after cleansing and before my facial oil. It feels a little stingy at first, but not in a bad way. In the way that you feel like it is doing something good for your skin.

Counter + Charcoal Facial Mask – This mask is awesome! It also will last you awhile because you really only need to use it once a week. My 16-year-old daughter was amazed by this one. She has oiler skin because she is young and youthful, and her pores have a tendency to get clogged up. She instantly saw the effects after using this mask.

Reflect Effect AHA Smoothing Mask – This is a bit spendy but truly does work wonders. It is as if it “plumps your face up”. I didn’t have the tool but wish I would have. It is also very soothing to my skin. You put it on and let it set for just 10 minutes. It is clear going on but once dry you see the little white flecks, which are bamboo particles. This is a hydrating and exfoliating mask.

Now Is the Time to Try BEAUTYCOUNTER

The “Ultimate Protocol” for Lyme Disease

A peaceful view from my parents’ house in Missouri

Now before I upset some of you, I will preface by saying this is not an actual protocol. The “ultimate protocol” is more about mindset and trusting your gut. You along with your Lyme practitioner should figure out what protocol is best for you. If you are looking for a doctor to help, check out Dr. Jennifer Grushon. I have been personally working with her for a year and a half. She is very skilled and qualified. Getting to the point, I was reminded in December what the “ultimate protocol” for Lyme disease was…it was trusting in God and using my intuition to guide me.

Looking at our finances and realizing we were spending north of $1,000 each month on my protocol a light went off and I just couldn’t rationalize it anymore. Does my health have a price? For me it does, what if I never fully recover from Lyme disease? My goal IS to get to remission, but there is an amount that financially works for my family each month and it was causing MORE stress to overspend on a protocol. I feel like the chronically ill can get taken advantage of, sometimes from well-meaning people. Have you ever been in the boat of the next best thing? If only I do “this” I will feel better. Honestly, I had just about enough!

Personal Check-In for Your Health

I finally realized I hadn’t been consulting the “ultimate healer” God. When I turned to Him with a radical prayer a few weeks prior to Christmas I put my trust more in Him than in my protocol; my health actually turned a corner. For any type of healing, I would suggest going back to the basics.

  • Are you sleeping well?
  • Are you moving your body and sweating?
  • Do you drink enough water?
  • What does your diet look like? Do you eat plenty of vegetables and fruit?
  • Do you get outside and breathe fresh air?
  • How are your relationships?

Each of these things in themselves can be something worth tackling. Often times taking care of ourselves is simpler than we make it out to be. Honestly, it wasn’t until I took an emotional/stressful hit to my life did my Lyme disease flare up. Sure, I had little signs that I wasn’t fully healthy all along looking back, but I was doing lots of things right, so it took a major hit to actually send my spiraling down the drain.

Protocols That Don’t Cost a Fortune

Sleep is tricky, but before spending lots of money try simple things. The things we all hear about but think they don’t apply to us.

Not Sleeping Well? Check out this post for more information.

  • Turn your wi-fi off before bed
  • Keep your house cool at night
  • Turn lights down low after dark
  • Try melatonin
  • Have a special bedtime routine, perhaps with an Epsom salt bath
  • Ask your Lyme practitioner how they can help

Walking is free and you can do it outside. Some patients with Lyme disease cannot walk, so even sitting in a chair outside even when it is cold can be beneficial.

Cutting out toxic relationships and unsafe people from your life can help tremendously. I can personally attest to this. I didn’t have the ability to completely cut a few people out of my life, so I learned how to create boundaries to keep me safe during our interactions. It does take some work, but again it is free! Check out my Resources page for the life coach I used that gave me practical tips to apply this to my life.

Adding to Your Protocol

If you aren’t able to exercise to induce sweating, consider adding a Therasage portable sauna to your arsenal of healing. Sure, it is roughly $1,000, but if you budget and save you won’t regret it. We used a portion of our health savings account this year for this purchase and it is literally the one thing I have bought for my health that I didn’t think after the fact, “did I really need this?” I am obsessed with it! They routinely have sales for up to 20% off. Also worth noting, it is low EMF. So, you aren’t adding to your problems while sitting in it.

Another splurge to consider is a water purification system. I have a Berkey, which is awesome! It filters out bacteria, viruses, chlorine, pesticides, herbicides and other harmful toxins. However, there are plenty of options out there now that could be more cost effective for you. Everyone has a different situation.

Prioritize Your Protocol

It is overwhelming to be chronically ill. So, I have had to really learn to say no and not feel guilty. In addition, don’t feel like you have to always explain yourself. I am still working on that part. Find the things that add to your life and healing, and not take, then make them a priority.

Daily prayer is a must for me. Continuing working on my relationship with God and making sure I have down time to hear from Him and just rest. I do not consider myself a “busy” person because I work really hard not to be. As a mom of three kids still at home, a wife, a part-time teacher, and a chronically ill person I try and live life slower than most people around me. If it will take from my family or my health, I have to say no. Sometimes exception are made for my kids because I don’t want them to continually suffer because “mom is sick”.

You Can Heal

Can trusting my intuition and God really help me heal? My answer to that is, ABSOLUTELY! After eliminating my stress, focusing on sweating, trusting my gut, prayer, and talking with my doctor about the cost and stress associated with it; I am healing faster. All days are not the same and sometimes I feel I am slipping backwards, but I try not to focus on my symptoms and just ride them out. They really do pass. You know that already if you have Lyme disease. Stop living as a sick person and start living again. I believe you can. Reach out and let me know your favorite ways to stay focused on healing, either in an email or in the comments below.

Benefits of Using Ozone Therapy for Lyme Disease

I recently started getting Ozone IV therapy again to combat my chronic Lyme disease and to give me that extra pep in my step. This isn’t my first round, and it is by far the most impactful treatment I have ever received. I drive 35-40 minutes each way every other week to go and get these miraculous IVs, which prompted this post of the benefits of using ozone therapy for Lyme disease. Find more information about the clinic here.

Well it has been a hot minute since my last blog post. Life for a chronic Lyme patient is unique. I explain it to people this way: I have a plate that only holds a certain amount, when something competes for that valuable space I have to let something else go. I recently started teaching 8th grade Health at a local private Christian school where my children attend. It has been a fun and scary addition to my life. Fun, because I am getting to review lots of old information in the arena of health and scary because my body and brain don’t always cooperate. The not knowing how you are going to feel haunts all us of with chronic illness. So inevitably, my blog took a hit for a few weeks and lesson planning took over. Find more about my story here.

I had slept terribly the night before this and looked exhausted, or maybe that’s how I always look.

What is Ozone Therapy?

Ozone is three oxygen molecules, O(3). It has been around and heavily studied for over 100 years. Medical O(3) is used to disinfect and treat disease. Ozone works by inactivation of bacteria, virus, fungi, yeast and protozoa, stimulation of oxygen metabolism, and activation of the immune system. As a refresher Babesia, a common Lyme co-infection, is a protozoa. In addition, cancer, AIDS, and SARS are also treated using ozone. Furthermore, it has been studied for so long, ozone is regarded as a highly safe treatment.

Ozone therapy, a highly safe and inexpensive treatment, is a germicide, not an antibiotic, and improves several physiological parameters essential for infection defense. Other known benefits are: immune modulation, enhancing circulation, destroying microorganisms, and enhancing oxygen delivery and consumption by the body.

A very small portion of your blood is taken my syringe then added into a bag with ozone in it. The practitioner then shakes it to mix the two together and runs it back into your arm through an IV. The total time it takes is about 30 minutes.

Benefits of Using Ozone for Lyme Patients?

Many chronic illnesses are associated with elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and low levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Cytokines are any of a number of substances, such as interferon, interleukin, and growth factors, which are secreted by certain cells of the immune system and have an effect on other cells. Symptoms from chronic infections, such as Lyme disease, are typically caused by a persistent pro-inflammatory immune response. Immune system modulation is one reason ozone therapy is effective at treating chronic infections.

Ozone therapy improves mitochondrial function leading to increased energy. Chronic Lyme patients often struggle with chronic fatigue and low energy.

Of coarse insurance doesn’t cover this treatment for any disease to my knowledge which is incredibly sad. I ask myself, why is this safe and highly functional treatment not being used by the “health care system”?

Ozone Therapy & UBI

This is the type of ozone therapy I receive. It’s ozone plus Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UBI). This process happens when the IV is ran through the machine in the picture above that is emitting UV. I found an article on PubMed that calls UBI “the cure that time forgot”. UBI was extensively used in the 1940s and 1950s to treat many diseases including septicemia, pneumonia, tuberculosis, arthritis, and asthma. Using low and mild doses of UV will kill microorganisms by damaging the DNA. However, any DNA damage in host cells can be rapidly repaired by DNA repair enzymes.

The introduction of antibiotics led to a decrease of use in this treatment. With the increase of antibiotic resistance diseases we may see UBI and ozone therapy more widely used. Studies show that these two treatments together and individually can treat these resistant strains without the use of antibiotics.

Practitioners That Stand the Test of Time

As a Lyme patient you come across doctors and practitioners that stand out. They are exceptional at what they do and you finally make progress. There are two for me personally that stand out.

Jennifer Orsua NP-C, runs the clinic I get the Ozone with UBI treatments. When I met her a few years back I really liked her not only as a person, but she knew what she was doing. It is truly harder to find than you think. Her clinic is Mountain View Functional Medicine in Post Falls, Idaho. I was able to grab a quote from her during my last visit in regards to ozone IV therapy.

It is my favorite therapy to use on anything from acute and chronic illness to joint pain.

Jen Orsua, NP-C

Dr. Jennifer Grushon will forever be my favorite doctor. If you know anything about me personally, it is that I don’t lightly recommend. These people are extraordinary at what they do!!! To be candid and 100% transparent I really am not a fan of the clinic as a whole that she works at. I met her at the Sophia Health Institute and followed her to this clinic. I recently had to see another doctor there due to the fact my doctor is temporarily out, and it was an awful experience. It just made Dr. Grushon stand out that much more. My back up will always be Sophia Health Institute, they truly specialize in Lyme disease.
